Working for a high school sports media company brings unique challenges, especially when it comes to securing sponsorships. One of the most exciting projects I worked on was creating brand assets for a potential Gatorade sponsorship. As a powerhouse in the sports industry, Gatorade’s involvement brought prestige and responsibility to create marketing materials that reflected their brand’s look and feel while aligning with the high school sports community we served.
Gatorade’s legacy is built on athletic performance and supporting athletes at all levels, from professionals to grassroots. My job was to dive into their iconic branding—bold colors, the recognizable lightning bolt logo, and the energy they bring to sports—while maintaining the authenticity of our media company’s mission. The key was finding a balance between Gatorade’s established identity and the values of high school sports.
Understanding Gatorade’s Legacy

Gatorade is an iconic brand with a storied history. Since its inception in 1965, Gatorade has been synonymous with athletic performance, recovery, and hydration. It’s a brand built on the foundation of supporting athletes, from the professional level to grassroots sports. My job, as a graphic designer and creative lead, was to translate that legacy into visuals that would resonate not only with Gatorade but also with the high school sports communities we served.
The first step was to dive deep into Gatorade’s brand history and identity. Gatorade’s look and feel are unmistakable: vibrant, energetic, and bold. The orange lightning bolt logo and the brand’s color palette of energetic oranges, greens, and yellows have become symbols of athletic endurance and excellence. These visual elements needed to blend seamlessly with our high school sports media company’s mission to inspire and elevate young athletes.
Creating Graphics and Marketing Materials

I developed a series of graphics, digital banners, and print materials that featured high school athletes in action, incorporating Gatorade’s branding elements while highlighting the energy and passion of young athletes. The visuals weren’t just about adding a logo; they were about creating a narrative that showed how Gatorade enhances the athletic experience, helping high school athletes perform at their best.
Sponsorships in high school sports media are particularly valuable because they tap into a community-driven audience. High school sports engage not only the athletes but also their families, friends, and local supporters. Brands like Gatorade benefit from being seen by these grassroots audiences, helping them build loyalty and long-term relationships with young athletes and their communities.
My role in this process went beyond just design; it was about understanding the deep connection between Gatorade’s brand values and the spirit of high school sports. The partnership was not just an advertisement but a way to position Gatorade as a supporter of youth athletics, giving them visibility among future stars while fostering a community connection.

Final Thoughts
Working on the Gatorade sponsorship was a rewarding and enlightening experience. It wasn’t just about creating graphics; it was about understanding the legacy of a brand like Gatorade and combining it with the heart and soul of high school sports. The sponsorship opportunity was more than just a partnership—it was a chance to showcase how two entities with a shared passion for sports could come together to create something impactful.
For brands like Gatorade, partnering with a high school sports media company is an opportunity to be part of a community and help inspire the next generation of athletes. For me, it was a reminder of the importance of understanding not just the visual elements of a brand but also its core values and history. By aligning these elements with our mission, we built a campaign that was more than just marketing—it was a celebration of athletic excellence.
